201 is the AISI numeric designation for this material. X12CrMnNiN17-7-5 is the EN chemical designation. It has a moderately high electrical conductivity among wrought austenitic stainless steels. In addition, it has a moderately low base cost and a moderately low embodied energy.

This steel is only hardened by cold rolling. The modulus of elasticity, E , has a value of approximately 21 0 MPa, which cannot be increased by heat treatment.

The following information shall be supplied by the purchaser at the time of enquiry and order:
a) the quantity to be delivered;
The products shall be free from internal defects that could impair their application to a significant extent. Tests appropriate for an assessment of the internal characteristics may be agreed upon at the time of enquiry and order.
Strip is usually supplied in coils. Thin strip may be wound on a supporting centre, made of steel, cardboard or other material, in order to avoid the collapse of the centre. Strip may also be supplied as a spool, in order to increase coil weight, whilst minimising coil outside diameter, in the latter case, any welds shall be clearly marked.
Alternatively, strip may be supplied in cut lengths. These may be in a box, or on a pallet, and perhaps strapped together in bundles.
Several coils, or bundles of cut lengths, may be assembled on a carrier.
Unless otherwise agreed at the time of enquiry and order, the choice of delivery form is left to the discretion of the manufacturer.

By special agreement, strip can also be supplied with mill edges or with special edges, e.g. machined edges, deburred edges or edges dressed to produce a regular form, usually square or round.
Type 201 Stainless Steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese stainless steel which was developed to conserve nickel. Type 201 is a lower cost alternative to conventional Cr-Ni stainless steels such as 301 and 304. Nickel is replaced by additions of manganese and nitrogen.
Stainless steels are high-alloy steels, which have high corrosion resistance when compared to other steels due to the presence of large amounts of chromium. Based on their crystalline structure, they are further divided into ferritic, austenitic, and martensitic steels. Another group of stainless steels are known as precipitation-hardened steels. They are the combination of martensitic and austenitic steels.
Grade 201 stainless steel has good formability, corrosion resistance, and fabricability. It is similar to that of 301 stainless steel. The following datasheet gives more details about grade 201 stainless steel.
Cold rolled narrow strip of thicknesses up to and including 3 mm in rolled widths fess than 600 mm made from the stainless steel grades.
