Material 301 (X10CrNi18-8 steel) is a European standard austenitic stainless steel with good corrosion resistance and weldability, as well as high strength and ductility, it is widely used in the production of high strength stainless steel springs. DIN EN 301 spring steel equivalent grades include AISI 301, JIS SUS301, GB 12Cr17Ni7.

This steel is only hardened by cold rolling. The modulus of elasticity, E , has a value of approximately 21 0 MPa, which cannot be increased by heat treatment.

The following information shall be supplied by the purchaser at the time of enquiry and order:
a) the quantity to be delivered;
The products shall be free from internal defects that could impair their application to a significant extent. Tests appropriate for an assessment of the internal characteristics may be agreed upon at the time of enquiry and order.
Strip is usually supplied in coils. Thin strip may be wound on a supporting centre, made of steel, cardboard or other material, in order to avoid the collapse of the centre. Strip may also be supplied as a spool, in order to increase coil weight, whilst minimising coil outside diameter, in the latter case, any welds shall be clearly marked.
Alternatively, strip may be supplied in cut lengths. These may be in a box, or on a pallet, and perhaps strapped together in bundles.
Several coils, or bundles of cut lengths, may be assembled on a carrier.
Unless otherwise agreed at the time of enquiry and order, the choice of delivery form is left to the discretion of the manufacturer.
Unless otherwise agreed at the time of enquiry and order, cold-rolled strip for springs is delivered with the edges. By special agreement, strip can also be supplied with mill edges or with special edges, e.g. machined edges, deburred edges or edges dressed to produce a regular form, usually square or round.
Type 301 is a chromium nickel austenitic stainless steel capable of attaining high strengths and ductility by cold working. It is not hardenable by heat treatment. Type 301 is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and becomes increasingly magnetic with cold working.
Stainless steel grade 301 is usually supplied in the form of strips and wires, with a tensile strength of up to 1800 Mpa, to produce tempers ranging from 1/16 Hard to Full Hard. By subjecting grade 301 to controlled analysis it is capable of retaining sufficient ductility even in ½ hard conditions. This form of grade 301 may be used in aircraft, rail car components and architectural structures. Tempers of this grade, ranging from ¾ to full hard, may be used in applications requiring high wear resistance and spring features with simple form designs.
Cold rolled narrow strip of thicknesses up to and including 3 mm in rolled widths fess than 600 mm made from the stainless steel grades. The steels are used in the conditions for the production of springs and spring parts that are exposed to corrosive effects and sometimes slightly increased temperatures.
